Cardio: Is it better to do shorter amounts at a higher resist, or Longer periods of time at a lighter resist?

I am currently doing cardio on my Elliptical on resistance 5 for 30 mins, five days a week. Burning 500 calories. Just wanting to know if I should start going over my 500 calorie mark and which way I will see better results for my time. :O)
