How would i repair a stone chip in my car?

i have a small chip on the bonnet and the correct liquid paint for it, do i fill the chip, sand it down with about grit800 then smooth it with 1200 then buff the paint in as i dont have a spray gun, again smooth it with 1200 and then wet and dry, then do i just buff in a laquer?
